I have suffered from migraine headaches for nearly 4 years now. The first time I experienced a migraine I was awoken from a deep sleep and it felt as if someone had hit me in the back of the head with a hammer. Literally.
I attempted to stand up and fell to the floor because my head was spinning and I was extremely dizzy. The pain would return at an undetermined time interval and each occurrence would feel like the first - a hammer to the back of the head. I stayed on the floor for what seemed like several hours but actually was just over an hour when my wife walked into the room an found me. She helped me to the bed where I would stay for the next two days.
Over those two days the pain eventually led to vomiting. My wife kept me supplied with Poweraide to combat dehydration, but I could not keep anything down. After two days of this suffering my wife transported me to the local hospital where I was immediately admitted.
After an examination by the hospital staff, I was given a morphine drip and diagnosed with migraines. The doctor refered me to a local neurologist for further treatment.
I visited the neurologist shortly thereafter. During this visit I came to realize that no one truly understands the pain of a legitimate migraine unless they have experiences one. The specialist was nothing more than a prescription pusher (in my opinion). The prescribed oxycodone and gave me various packs of medicationss to try such as: Maxalt, Axert. He also prescribed Imitrex, Frova and put me on Topamax.
I took the Topamax for about three weeks and then stopped taking it. I simply could not stand the way it made me feel. None of the other medications worked very well either.
Long story short, I stilll suffer from migraine headaches. I am not taking any prescription medication at this time. But there is a bright side to all this because my headaches are not nearly as severe as they were in the beginning.
The purpose of this website is to give the migraine headache sufferer a place to get solid information in their quest for relief from this debilitating pain.
